I am writing as a business professional and member of the Australian Fashion Council (AFC) to express my support for the AFC’s 2025-26 Federal Budget submission (https://ausfashioncouncil.com/news/afc-federal-budget-submission-2025-26/) and urge the government to prioritise investment in Australia’s fashion and textile sector.

Our industry contributes $27.2 billion to the economy, generates $7.2 billion in export revenue, and employs nearly 500,000 Australians—more than the mining and utilities sectors combined. However, we are facing significant challenges, including supply chain disruptions, rising costs, skills shortages, and increased competition from overseas fast-fashion giants.

The AFC’s budget submission aligns with key national priorities and outlines recommendations that will:
✔ Support advanced manufacturing and sovereign capability by increasing government procurement of Australian-made textiles and strengthening local supply chains.
✔ Create jobs and boost skills development by ensuring key industry roles, such as sewing machinists, are recognised as priority occupations with access to training and skilled migration pathways.
✔ Bolster women’s economic security by strengthening our sector, where women make up over 75% of the workforce, providing stable jobs and career pathways, particularly in manufacturing.
✔ Drive economic growth internationally and small business resilience by securing funding for Australian Fashion Week, supporting exports, and helping Australian brands enter global markets.
✔ Accelerate the transition to a net-zero future by investing in AI-powered waste reduction tools, Digital Product Passports, and circular economy initiatives.

These initiatives are vital to ensuring a strong future for Australian fashion and textiles—an industry that is a major employer of Australian women and plays a crucial role in our economy and culture.

I urge you to support the AFC’s recommendations and advocate for investment in our sector as part of the 2025-26 Federal Budget.
